Before this lesson I had little to no knowledge on invented religions, I hadn’t really put into thought the amount of the many invented religions that there are, and I hadn’t really thought about some people taking them seriously. I still don’t know how to feel about the Jediism as a religion. Don’t get me wrong, I do believe that anyone can have their beliefs and follow whatever they choose; however, it is hard for me to see Jediism as a religion because it came from pop culture and the Star Wars films. I think that I can see it more as a way of lifestyle, but I would need to learn more about it to see it as a religion. I think its interesting how it has helped many people with their lives and rough patches that they have had.

Hello everyone!

I hope you are excited for this course as much as I was when I started it, something that helped me the most with this course were the podcasts! I am sure you will like them as much as I did. Another thing that was really helpful was the professor CJ, if you ever have a problem with the class or even outside of the class the professor will help you in anything he can. I wish I had taken this course sooner because it really changed my perspective on the study of religion and also on many stereotypes that are not even true. I wish you all the very best in this course!

In this lesson I learned that Judaism was viewed as an incomplete religion. Before reading the articles I thought so too that the religion was someone incomplete, growing up in a Catholic family that was all that was told to me, but after this lesson I am amazed by my ignorance. I now understand that Jews aren’t following an “incomplete” religion and that they should not feel the need to explain and to prove themselves towards Christianity. I am shocked by how they were seen as a minority religion since it has been one of the oldest religions of time. It is sad to see how there are many who blame them for killing Christ, and to also see all the hate and discrimination that they recieve just for following their beliefs and traditions.

In this lesson I learned how toxic tolerance really is. Before reading the articles I thought that tolerance was not that big of a deal, I never really saw it as a “us-them” relationship; however, after reading the articles I realize how dangerous and bad it really is. “Tolerating” religion is not what America say’s its based in, if there was truly freedom of religion everyone would be treated the same for their beliefs. No individual would be seen as bad for following a certain religion. Because of the term “tolerance” there is a form of hate and discrimination created, that is why I believe that in order for America to proceed and accept every religion as equal tolerance should not be the way to go with.

Before this lesson I would’ve thought that the U.S. is very free with religion and with different perspectives and beliefs; however, after reading the articles I realize that yes it might be very diverse, but it is still lacking the same respect and equality towards many religions. It amazes me how privilged certain religions are to this day in this country that is supposed to be “equal” for all. I have learned that many religions are still prioritized more than others especially those which are more popular such as Christianity.

After reading more about this lesson I have come to the conclusion that sexual acts, purity acts, and everything that comes with it are just a sign of power. Something that I have always asked myself while growing up in a Catholic family was who invented this, like why is…

This lesson didn’t really change my point of view of how I see gender and religion. I feel like Gender does take a big part of religion and how men and women will practice it. Something that I actually really enjoyed from this lesson was the video on gender expression. At first I didn’t really understand it and was a little bit confused on how gender was a “perfomance”, however, after watching the videos it came to my understanding that our gender is the way we decide to express ourselves and it is not our “biological sex” as how many see it. Before this lesson I still thought that gender was the same thing as their biological sex, nonetheless, I am glad that I know understand the difference between them, and feel good about being able to see what people mean by their gender expression.

Before this lesson I had always seen race as one thing which was based on how people see race as a group that share the same skin color; however, it was very interesting to me that race wasn’t the same before and how it was more of the set of…
